Это человеческая комедия в сокращенном варианте, даже в миниатюре; именно тут имеет смысл говорить о микрокосме. Подобная миниатюризация превосходно отражает точку зрения Улмера на мир, а это всегда точка зрения обитателя Сириуса или Марса на планету Земля. Под участливым, но отстраненным взглядом гениального ученика Mуpнау все мужчины и женщины выглядят лишь нелепыми и трогательными марионетками, которые делают три оборота вокруг своей оси и уходят со сцены. Нельзя сказать, что тот или иной аспект сюжета или жанр, к которому он относится, как-то по-особенному странен и причудлив.
